February 2018
We celebrated St. Brigid's Day, 1st of February, by making St. Brigid's Crosses from rushes which Mr. Vaughan brought to school from Co. Donegal. Mr. Vaughan taught all the First Classes how to make a cross.
January 2018
In January, we painted beautiful Winter pictures. We researched the difference between the Antarctic and the Arctic. We learnt all about the travels of the very brave Irish explorer, Tom Crean.
December 2017
We learnt all about the planets in our solar system. We think there is life on other planets and these are some of the pictures of the friendly aliens we would like to meet some day.

We had lots of fun when our families came to see us during Science Week! We taught them all about what we had learned about the 5 Senses!

2016-2017
Winners from the Write-a-Book Competition 2017
All of the first classes participated in the write a book project this year. Each child got the chance to write their own book and illustrate it. These books were then sent off to another school in Dublin where they were read and reviewed. The winners were then chosen and they traveled to Dublin west education Centre for the prize giving ceremony. Welll done to all our budding authors!

Forces: Push and Pull
In First Class this month we tested different types of forces. We did experiments using push and pull. We tested elastic, marla and paper. When we applied force we found that materials changed and some returned to how they were originally.

International Day Celebrations
We had lots of fun learning about different countries for International Day. We learned songs and poems in other languages, we read books written in different languages and we told other all about our chosen country at assembly.
During the month of May we had a May altar in our classrooms and said the rosary every day.

Tree Week 2016
A big thank you to Leon Uzell and his colleague Donal O'Connor for coming to our school to plant trees for Tree Week. We learned lots about taking care of trees and about how important they are! We planted three trees. A mountain ash tree, a lime tree and a hazel tree. We look forward to watching our trees grow over the coming months and years!

World Book Day 2016!
We celebrated World Book Day today. It was great fun!
We really enjoyed our visit to the Junior Infant classes. We read our books to them and they told us about their books. We also brought our favourite books to school.
Jim McGonigle a zookeeper from Dublin Zoo visited our school.
He had lots of interesting things to show us.
He told us all about the animals in the zoo.

Children in First Class have been learning all about birds as part of our efforts to increase bio diversity in and around our school. We made bird feeders and hung them on the trees in our yard.
In The School Garden
We planted bulbs in our garden at the end of September. Now that Spring is here we hope to see some lovely flowers!

Room 15 - A Visit from Scientists
Some scientists from the Royal College of Surgeons came to visit some of the first classes on 21 January. Here they are in Room 15 helping us with experiments to investigate our senses of smell, sight, hearing and touch. We had great fun!
Room 15 - Quiz Time!
We had a table quiz in Room 15 all about Tom Crean, the Antarctic explorer from Co. Kerry. We've been learning lots about him, as well as other Antarctic explorers. ... and penguins!
We visited Santa's Grotto and sang some Christmas songs.

Room 14 Planted Chestnuts in Milk Cartons on National Tree Day
This is how we did it:
- We brought in milk cartons and made holes in the bottom of them.
- We tested our chestnuts out in water to see if they would be good for planting.
- If they floated they would not grow. If they sank they were good for planting!
- We collected little stones and put them in the bottom of our milk cartons.
- We mixed together compost and sand and filled our cartons with it.
- We made a little hole in the compost and planted our chestnut in it.

Autumn Walk
The boys and girls in room 35 went on an autumn walk. We investigated the school garden and found many different plants and trees. Have a look through the photos of our walk to see what we found.

Congratulations to our first class boys who graduated from the Assumption Junior School today. Their performances for their parents was fantastic. Take a look at them release balloons to mark this very significant event.

Our school garden welcomed some very special spring guests!
The children in first class welcomed their parents into their classrooms for Science Day. We have been learning all about our five senses. Experiments included investigating our sense of smell, sight, taste, hearing and touch.
